Ok thank you. I think that makes sense. Like I said I am not trying to dismiss this I just don’t really understand it I guess.
Can somebody please explain this whole “cultural appropriation” thing to me?
I am clearly ignorant on this subject and anytime I try to read more about it I get more confused.
Don’t get me wrong, I completely understand why dressing up as a person from a different race for Halloween is offensive but I still don’t understand why a white person having a dream catcher in their house is seen as being ignorant or racist?
I’m not trying to dismiss this as an issue, I just don’t understand why people get so mad about someone else trying to embrace elements of their culture?
It just seems to me that the same people who get mad about things like this are the same people fighting against racism and for equality.
If we are all citizens of the same Earth, I personally think it is awesome to learn about different cultures, and to embrace them. I think it’s actually more closed minded to say, NO you can only do certain things and listen to certain music if you are a certain race.
This issue kind of hits home because I live in Tucson and every year there is a huge day of the dead celebration downtown and I hear people ALL over U of A saying they are mad at white people for going.
Im writing this after reading this article where it states that anyone who covers a hip hop song is being ironically racist?
What am I missing here?
